Mother’s Day DIY Gift: Fingerprint Jar Vase

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time of year to celebrate all the mothers in your life. But what I love in particular is coming up with a fun Mother’s Day DIY gift that the kids can do by themselves for their Grandma (this works for moms, aunts, and other mother figures, too).

A few years back, we had made a beautiful vase for our Grammie, all decorated with kids’ fingerprints . We also made paper flowers, all of which had sweet sentiments written on them to put inside. The idea was for my Mom-in-Law to use the jar as a vase for her bouquets all year round. But instead, she has kept it as is and proudly displays it on her shelf to this day. Whatever a special mom in your life decides to use it for, I think our Mother’s Day DIY Gift, a Fingerprint Jar Vase, will be a very special gift indeed!

Mother’s Day DIY Gift (Fingerprint Jar Vase) tutorial:

1.Find a jar

First, you need to find an empty jar. In our case, we used a large pickle jar that we had just finished!

If your jar has a label on it, then you will need to take it off. After pulling off the label on my jar, there was a sticky residue left. Nail polish remover worked like a charm to clean it all off.

2.Set up Paint

Set up all the different colored paints you plan to use. I poured a little of each color on dessert paper plates. They were easy to pass around between my kids as they took turns.

3.Fingerpainting flowers

Have your child dip his or her finger into the paint of choice. Then, make prints on the jar with fingers. We decided to make flowers with our fingerprints, so we arranged the fingerprints in circles with a different color in the center. You may need to help your kids hold the jar for safety and stability.

After your fingerprint flowers (or any other design you choose) are done, you can put your jar aside to dry.

4.Seal with Mod Podge

Seal the jar with a layer of Mod Podge. This will give your vase a polished shiny look, as well as protect the paint from chipping.

You can stop here and, after sealing you jar with Mod Podge, fill the vase with flowers and present it to your special person. This could work for younger children who cannot yet talk and remember special things about their Grandma or Mom.

However, my kids were older, and so we decided to add paper flowers with special messages on them to our vase.

5.Make paper flowers

While the jar is drying, it’s time to work on the flowers. Using colored cardstock paper and cookie cutters (or you can freehand draw them as well), have your children trace the flowers onto the paper. We cut out 10 flowers, so each of my kids got 5.

6.Cut and decorate flowers

Cut the flowers out using scissors. We added some paint fingerprints to the flowers as well, because we wanted to do paint just a little bit longer.

7.Find some sticks

Go outside and pick up some small sticks from your yard or from your walk. You can also use small dowels or even skewers. They will make the stems for the flowers.

8.Collect kids’ memories and thoughts

Ask your kids about their favorite memories or things they love about their Grandma/Mom and then write  your children’s special messages on the flowers.

As you can see, making a Mother’s Day DIY Gift (Fingerprint Jar Vase) can be a fun craft for you and your kids. It took us one evening to complete, so if you’re pressed for time, this will be a perfect project! Not only did we make something with our own hands, but we also recycled and repurposed! What great lessons to teach your children as you make crafts and have fun!
